Brief tutorial on how framing a photo using Photoshop
Framing a photo or any picture in Photoshop is quite simple and easy. Basically, we can make a frame with any shape we like such as triangle and circular shape, but rectangle is obviously a common shape of a frame. In this simple tutorial, I will show you how to make a frame based on rectangular shape using the image from www.bigfoto.com.
So, let’s start!
- Open the image you want to be framed.

- Create a new layer by clicking the “Create an new layer” icon on the bottom of the Layer Palette, and make a selection using “Rectangular Marquee Tool” on the Toolbox or press “M” on your keyboard. The rectangular marquee size should be smaller than the image.

- Invert the selection by pressing Ctrl+Shift+I or by clicking “Inverse” on the Select menu.

- Fill the selection with any color you wish. In this tutorial I use #DF61A8. If you want to fill the selection with Foreground color, press Alt+Delete or press Ctrl+Delete to fill it with background color.
- Now we have the frame around the image with pink color.

- We can make the frame more attractive by adding some effects. The effects can be obtained from the “Filter” menu. Here, I add noise and Angled Stroke effects with the settings as shown below.

- Press Ctrl+D to remove the selection. Now the frame look like this

- The last step is to add more realism to the frame by using some blending from “Add a layer style” at the bottom of the Layer Palette.

You can try drop shadow, bevel, or emboss with it’s various settings. In this tutorial, I use drop shadow and stroke with settings like in picture.
